21 million electric vehicles will be on roads across the world by 2030

21 million electric vehicles will be on roads across the world by 2030

The global audit firm Deliotte has issued a report that states there will be an additional 21 million electric vehicles on the road globally by 2030.

In 2018 there were two million electric cars and these predictions are suggesting numbers will rise to four million in 2020, 12 million in 2025 and 21 million by 2030.

The report further predicts that battery electric vehicles will account for 70 per cent of electric vehicle sales by 2030.

The two main factors credited with this quick uptake of electric cars, according to the report are:

  • Growing consumer demand for greener vehicles and
  • Government policies that incentivise electric cars and penalise the use of petrol and diesel vehicles.

The research goes on to say that improved technology will reduce the cost of an electric car (relative to a petrol model), with an expectation of global consistency by 2024 and UK consistency by 2021.
